This past weekend was the beginning of college football. And although, my Alma mater is the same as Vince Lombardi, football was not that much of integral part of my college experience. Don't get me wrong I love my RAMS. However, I cannot even compete with the sea of burnt orange that emerges every Saturday morning starting early September. These people are serious about their football. Scary crazy serious. One of our neighbors dons his car every fall with football helmets, longhorn flags and decal stickers. I am shocked that he does not get into an accident everyday with how distracting his car is. Grown men extending their arms high in the air with their pinky and pointer finger stretched out and singing "the eyes of Texas"- I mean, how ridiculous?!
Matt still gets giddy telling me how he and his brother, Tim, were at the Rose Bowl in 2005 when UT beat USC. Matt still talks about "VY" and how memorable that championship game was. Of course the story is never complete without the infamous Longhorn hand puppet.
My first UT game came in October 2008. Matt and I went with my brother in law, Anthony and my sister, Lee. Anthony had gotten tickets to the UT vs. Oklahoma State University game from his boss. The four of us had a couple of cocktails before the game and walked to the stadium from our apartment. After dodging a sea of orange and the trickling sweat down my boobs (yes, it is still that hot in Texas in late October), we arrived at the stadium. We made our way to the seats - I was taking in the scene, college kids, old men and women, families, little kids all decked out in their UT gear. This isn't so bad, I thought to myself and then it happened....."The Eyes of Texas" - at that point in my life, I've never seen roughly 100,000 people sign in unison. It was intense, it was overwhelming and it was exhilarating. From that moment on I became a Longhorn fan.
